Veterans Choice Insurance Requires Preauthorization

Millions of veterans have received Veterans Choice cards for medical care, but only some are eligible for coverage. It is veterans’ responsibility to obtain preauthorization for care at Great River Health System and health care providers.

The Veterans Choice Program covers primary, inpatient, outpatient specialty and mental health care for eligible veterans. It may be used when the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) cannot provide care within 30 days of the patient’s preferred date or a date that is medically determined by a health care provider, and for those who live more than 40 miles from a VA medical care facility.

The program is part of the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act of 2014.

To request authorization before an appointment, patients must call HealthNet at 866-606-8198, option 1. Approval is granted for one appointment. If appointments are rescheduled, the patient must call HealthNet again to receive authorization.
