2020 Medicare change creates questions; SHIIP provides answers

A change in Medicare law scheduled for 2020 is creating confusion today. Volunteer counselors from Iowa Insurance Division’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) can help.

SHIIP provides free, unbiased information about Medicare and Medicare supplements, which help pay for coinsurance, copayments and deductibles on Medicare-covered services. Counselors see clients by appointment in Great River Health Systems’ Volunteer Services office.

If you own a Medicare Supplement C or F plan before Jan.1, 2020, you don’t have to replace it. These plans will become unavailable only to people who become eligible for or enrolled in Medicare after that date.

SHIIP counselors statewide have been answering questions about the change in Medicare supplements plans sold by private insurance companies to fill the gaps in traditional Medicare plans (Pars A and B).

SHIIP has been seeing items claiming Medicare Supplements Plans C and F will become unaffordable in 2020, so people should switch now. Medicare supplement plans have changed over the years, but the Iowa Insurance Division has never seen rate spirals in the Medicare supplements market.

SHIIP counselors can answer questions and review policies to ensure clients get the most from their Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans. To make an appointment, please call (319) 768-3342.
