Great River Cardiology Offers Screening for Peripheral Arterial Disease

Great River Cardiology will offer a free peripheral arterial disease (PAD) screening from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 15. Great River Cardiology is in Suite 109, Eastman Plaza, 1223 S. Gear Ave., West Burlington, Iowa.

PAD is a form of atherosclerosis, the hardening and narrowing of arteries caused by gradual buildup of fatty deposits and other substances. The most common form affects the legs. Many people with the disease have no symptoms or mistake their symptoms for something else. Symptoms of severe PAD include:

  • A marked decrease in the temperature of the lower leg or foot, especially compared with the other leg or to the rest of the body
  • Foot or toe wounds that will not heal or heal slowly
  • Gangrene
  • Leg pain that does not go away after exercising

Risk factors for PAD are:

  • Age (70 and older for nonsmokers; 50 and older for smokers)
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Physical inactivity
  • Smoking

Participants must remove their shoes and socks for the screening, which takes about 15 minutes. Appointments are required. Please call Great River Health Systems’ Corporate Education Department at (319) 768-4070.
