3D mammography

3D images of the breast are created by using several low-dose digital X-rays taken at different angles. A computer converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing radiologists to review breast tissue one layer at a time.

In conventional 2D mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal.

In a clinical study reported in the June 25, 2014 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association, use of the Selenia Dimension 3D mammograpjy system (used by Great River Medical Center) resulted in a:

  • 41 percent increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers
  • 40 percent reduction in false positive results
  • 29 percent increase in the detection of all breast cancers
  • 15 percent decrease in women recalled for additional imaging
